ANCIENT CARNIVAL IN EUROPE

Carnival in Evoléne (Switzerland)

Evoléne is located in Southern Switzerland, in the Alps.

It's one of the last regions where Franco-Provençal language is spoken and the only region in Switzerland where all generations speak it. People of all ages speak this language spontaneusly, which means that the language is still alive and well.

In Carnival, young people wear costumes made of sacks filled with straw and they walk through the streets during the traditional carnival procession.

Other people wear masks representing cats, foxes or wolves. These masks are real works of art and are made by regional artists. Their bodies are covered in sheep, fox or marmot hide, and they carry cow bells, to be rung when they aproach a victim!
