Easter holidays are here!
On wednesday everybody will say goodbye to school and we will
enjoy some nice spring days.
Are you doing something special on Easter holidays?
In some countries as Germany, U.K., Ireland, U.S.A... there´s a very popular tradition: Easter Bunnies. It has a German origin but now it´s celebrated in a lot of places.
Have you seen chocolate bunnies and eggs somewhere in Gasteiz?
Have you eaten them?
The Easter Bunnies bring baskets filled with coloured eggs, sweets and sometimes also toys to children on the night before Easter.
The Bunnies will either put the baskets in a designated place or hide them
somewhere in the house or garden for the children to find when they wake up in the morning.
If you go to the mountain, to the beach, to the cinema... if you stay in Gasteiz or another town:
This is the story of Hiccup, a viking boy who lives on the island of Berk, where fighting dragons is a way of life. Hiccup is trained to be a dragon fighter, but one day he knows a very special dragon and they become friends, but then...
If you want to know how the story ends, you can see it at the cinema on March 26.
Have you seen today any person wearing a green hat?
Today is Saint Patrick's Day and it's celebrated on 17 March in many places, and here, in Gasteiz, Irish and local people go to Irish Pubs to celebrate the day.
It's named after the Patron Saint of Ireland and it is a public holiday in this country.
But this day is celebrated all around the world , mainly in USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand... where we can find important Irish communities.
Many people wear green clothes and there are big parades in a lot of cities. In some places they colour the streets or dye the water in fountains, lakes and rivers, as in Chicago, where they dye the river using natural dyes.
Carnival is celebrated all around the world. Who doesn't know about Carnival in Venice, Tenerife or Rio de Janeiro...?
But there is another not so well known Carnival celebrated in small towns, some of them very close to us.
Do you know Carnival Celebrations in Zalduondo, Lantz or Altsasu? They are some of the oldest in Europe.
But probably you don't know about the Mamuthones from Mamoiada (Sardinia).
They appear on Carnival Sunday and on Shrove Tuesday. They are dressed in black sheepskin and wear around thirty kilos of cowbells on their backs. They cover their faces with a dark brown wooden mask.
The Mamuthones are usually twelve, to symbolize the number of the months of the year and they dance rhythmically in two parallel lines along the narrow streets of Mamoiada.
But they are not the only ones who wear sheepskin and cowbells. Do you know any of these?
They are celebrated in Greek Macedonia, Zubieta and Ituren (Nafarroa).
'Lemon Tree' is a song by German pop band 'Fool´s Garden' and it became very popular in 1996.
You can sing and listen to this song following the lyrics in this video.
There has been a lot of snow in Gasteiz, did you enjoy it? Snow is funny but it brings a lot of problems in the streets, roads... There have been a lot of accidents and many people fell down in the streets because of the ice. Those people were taken to the hospital, some of them with broken bones.
Did you have problems to come to school? How did you come? on foot? by bus? by car?
Tell us about your experiences.
In Europe, there has been a lot of snow too, here you have some examples:
The Eiffel Tower, one of Paris' main touristic attractions, was closed because of the snow and the ice.
In Milan (Italy) it was difficult to walk near the famous Cathedral.
A lot of airports were closed and many flights were cancelled or delayed. Here you can see Manchester airport in England.
